May 2--HONG Kong-based niche carrier Gold Star Line (GSL), which operates as a subsidiary of Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, is to operate on a weekly rotation providing a direct connection between China, South East Asia and South Africa.
The SA1 service will be launched on May 7 to meet growing demand for improved services to Africa's economic powerhouse.
The SA1 service will have a 63-day rotation comprising eight 3,300 TEU vessels. GSL will also offer intermodal services to inland areas of South Africa, primarily via Durban, providing direct access to agricultural and industrial regions of the country.
Managing director of Gold Star Line, Danny Hoffmann, said: "GSL has a long-established history of serving the African market and we see rich potential in this new service, as South Africa develops stronger trade links with both North East Asia and South East Asia."
One area that GSL is keen to develop is growing demand for fresh fruit from South Africa to the Asia. Reefer services will be provided for this trade with Hong Kong as a direct port of call.
The SA1 port rotation: Xingang, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Nansha, Singapore, Port Kelang, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Port Kelang, Hong Kong and returning Xingang.
